A graduate of Concordia University, Cohen has been a major figure on the Canadian photography scene for over thirty years. She has been invited as guest lecturer to many Canadian universities, and was awarded the Canada Council’s prestigious Duke and Duchess of York Prize in Photography (1988). Her master’s thesis examined feminist art in the 1970s, while her art practice, which is largely autobiographical, weaves original links between photography, painting and film. Cohen creates works that directly reference the historical and social context of the artist, especially through depictions of gender and the body. She has participated in numerous group shows both in Canada and abroad (France, Germany, Mexico, the United Kingdom, etc.) and has had solo exhibitions in major Canadian cities from Halifax to Vancouver, as well as in New York, Marseilles, and Tempe, Arizona. ) Her work is found in major collections, such as the Bibliothèque Kandinsky, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada. In 1986, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal hosted an extensive exhibition of her work; a catalogue, Divans maudits, was published for a solo show at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris (2003). She lives and works in Montreal.
Depuis plus de trente cinq ans, Sorel Cohen est une figure importante de la scène artistique canadienne. Sa démarche, résolument autobiographique et féministe, tisse des liens originaux entre la photographie, la peinture et l’histoire de l’art. Dans les années 1970, Cohen s’est investie dans des pratiques nouvelles comme la fusion de la performance et de la photographie, une approche rarement utilisée à l’époque, et devenait actrice de sa mise en image. Cohen a participé à de nombreuses expositions collectives et individuelles, ici et à l’étranger, parmi lesquelles Le geste oublié, en 1986, au Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, Divans maudits, au Centre culturel canadien à Paris en 2003 et plus récemment, ELLES Photographes, au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal en 2016-17 et Photography in Canada: 1960–2000, au Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada à Ottawa, d'avril à septembre 2017. Cohen a remporté en 1988 le prestigieux Prix du duc et de la duchesse d’York en photographie décerné par le Conseil des arts du Canada. Elle s’est vue confier plusieurs mandats à titre de professeure invitée dans diverses institutions d’enseignement supérieur au pays. Son œuvre fait partie de plusieurs collections publiques dont la Bibliothèque Kandinsky du Centre Georges Pompidou à Paris, le Cabinet de la photographie de la Bibliothèque nationale à Paris, le Musée des Beaux-Arts du Canada à Ottawa, la Galerie d’art de l’Ontario, le Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal et le Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. Elle vit et travaille à Montréal.
